Divisions | Bicycle Unit Division

1999 marked the 100th anniversary of the first bicycle patrol. While bicycles were not used for many years, there are now forty (40) officers who use bicycles to patrol the city. Bicycle patrols provided even more direct and accessible neighborhood services to citizens. They supplement foot patrols while working in the districts during day and evening shifts. They help increase officer visibility and provide new mobility in areas such as parks and narrow walkways where terrain would prohibit other kinds of access. Bicycle officers participate in safety programs at schools and community events. In 1999, the Department opened its own bicycle repair shop. Three of our officers are State-certified trainers, enabling all required training to take place in-house.
