In this Issue:
This is a class for paddlers with some kayak touring experience wanting to take the sport to the next level, but we may be able to make accommodations for beginners. Participants will learn to be confident and safe paddlers with the skills to participate in kayak touring in protected waters. This course will cover the standard American Canoe Association curriculum including complete equipment needs, car-topping, trip-planning and risk management. It will also cover all basic strokes for maneuvering, stability and recovery: forward, reverse, stopping, side-draws, bow and stern rudders, and bracing. Safety components include capsizing/wet-exit, boat-swim, swimmer-rescue, deep-water assisted recoveries and self rescues of all types.
All equipment, including sit-inside sea kayaks, PFD’s, paddles and related safety gear will be provided at no additional fee. Upon inspection and approval by our Certified ACA kayaking instructors, participants may also choose to use their own gear. Bring snacks and plenty of water.

New Nature Interpretive Sign at Lighthouse Point Park’s
Butterfly and Bird Garden
New Haven Parks, Recreation and Trees Department is proud to announce a new Nature Interpretive Sign at Lighthouse Point Park’s Butterfly and Bird Garden. This new colorful sign was funded by an Urban Oasis grant from the National Audubon Society as part of a Coastal Grassland restoration project, just across the street from the garden. Click here to view photos of the Garden and Signage.
The sign depicts the life-cycle of the Monarch Butterfly, identifies a few species of local butterflies and nectar plants that attract and feed them, as well as explaining how you can create a butterfly friendly garden in your own backyard.
Special thanks go out to the following organizations and their volunteers, who all contributed to its creation by providing input : Connecticut Butterfly Association, New Haven Bird Club, and National Audubon Society.I would especially like to thank the Peabody Museum, its Public Outreach and Education Department and its Graphic Design Department, for helping us create some best interpretive signs found in any City parks through out the State of Connecticut.
Please stop by the Butterfly Garden when you visit Lighthouse Point Park. I am sure you will be impressed by the colorful flowers, butterflies and birds found there.

Trees between 25 and 40 feet high will be considered for future years or other locations.
