    Obtaining a library card

    • Cards are free and most are issued immediately
    • Register for a card at the Main Library or any of our 4 branches
    • Cards are valid for three years
    • Card applications are available en español
    • Your nhfpl card may be used in any public library in Connecticut

    For New Haven residents:


    Adults
    • You will be asked to show (1) a photo ID (such as a driver’s license) and (2) documentation of your current
    New Haven address.

    Teens and Children
    • If you are under 18 years of age, you and your guardian must sign your application.

    College & University Students

    • If you are a college or graduate student residing in New Haven, you can obtain a nhfpl card. On campus
    students must present a student ID or a letter of enrollment issued by your school with the year of graduation
    and/or completion of program clearly marked on it.

    • Off campus students living in New Haven need a photo ID and documentation of your current
    New Haven address.

    • If you are attending a college or university in New Haven but actually live in another Connecticut town,
    you must first obtain a library card from your hometown. Bring your hometown library card, along with
    a photo ID, and be entered into our New Haven Public Library circulation system.

    Borrowers from other Connecticut libraries

    Out of town borrowers can present a valid library card from your hometown that shows the expiration date
    and a photo ID to be added to nhfpl’s system and be eligible to borrow.

    Borrowing materials

    • Go to our website www.nhfpl.org for e-books & downloadable audiobooks!
    • All Print items books, magazines, comics may be borrowed for 3 weeks with 3 renewals unless there
    is a hold on an item up to a maximum of 30 items.
    • All DVDs may be borrowed for 1 week with 1 renewal unless there is a hold on the item up to a maximum
    of 5 items.
    • All other AV items music CDs, recorded books may be borrowed for 3 weeks with 3 renewals unless
    there is a hold on an item up to a maximum of 10 items

    Renewals
    • Renewal on all items is for 1 week per renewal.
    • Renewals may be placed in-person, via phone (203.946.8135), through your account online:
    http://library.nhfpl.org/patroninfo, or by contacting your local branch.

    Fines
    • Overdue fines are $0.20 per day per item with the exception of dvds which are $1.00 per day per item.
    • Materials may be returned to any branch of nhfpl.
    • To avoid fines use our book drops when libraries are closed.
