Administrator's Introduction to New Haven's Economy

WELCOME to New Haven! New Haven is an impressive city, representing a major center for business activity, architecture, culture, and entertainment and world-class research and education. If you are looking for the ideal business location, look no further than New Haven.

New Haven is truly at the dawn of a new era for business growth. We are the bio-tech capital of Connecticut with Greater New Haven hosting 39 (20 in New Haven proper) of the State’s 52 firms. The City is in the midst of a notable transformation designed to render this New England gem even more as a destination city. A massive $1.5 billion agenda is designed to grow the downtown, where nearly half of the city's jobs are centered, renew the waterfront and take advantage of our excellent transportation system. Projects include the new $500 million Yale-New Haven Cancer Center, a new home for Gateway Community College and one of the first LEED Gold certified projects and largest recent private development, the $180 million 360 State Street development, which will result in 500 new housing units.

There is no comparison for a city in New England with the diversity of choices for entertainment, dining, and unique cultural experiences. An annual calendar of special events energizes city life in New Haven. There's the Music on the Green that enlivens Saturdays nights in the summer, an up-and-coming film festival showcasing independent filmmakers, the New Haven Jazz Festival, City-Wide Open Studios, one of the largest open studio events in the country, the innovative International Festival of Arts and Ideas, a massive event that engages the city in performances, hands-on arts experiences and symposiums. Museums like the Peabody Museum of Natural History, arts centers like the Yale University Art Gallery, The Yale Center for British Art and performance centers like the historic Shubert, Theater and the Tony-award winning Long Wharf Theater exemplify the quality mix of cultural destinations.

My office is designed to work effectively and efficiently to address your business needs or move your development project forward. I oversee all the city departments that relate to business and real estate development including City Plan, Transportation, Housing, Building, and the Commission on Equal Opportunities, Cultural Affairs and Economic Development. This affords me direct oversight of your project.

New Haven invites you to become a part of our future growth. View the rest of our web pages to find out more why we think you should be in New Haven. If you need more information or have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.
