Welcome to the Office of Sustainability's website!

    What is Sustainability?

Sustainability entails meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs, by making social and economic challenges compatible with environmental responsibility. For more information on the office, click here.

    Residential Programs

    Residential Single Stream Recycling Program

Curbside - You can now mix all different types of recyclables together in your bin. Find your refuse collection day here.

Recycling Center - If you cannot fit all your recyclables in your bin, you can bring them to our self-service Recycling Center for drop-off. Hours and location information can be found here.

    Compost @ Home

Create rich, fertile soil for your yard by composting kitchen scraps, yard waste, and other appropriate organic materials in a backyard compost bin. While the City of New Haven does not offer compost services, you can request a small free compost bin for your yard at the Public Works Headquarters (34 Middletown Ave.) during normal business hours (203-946-7700).

    Hazardous Waste

HazWaste Central coordinates drop-off of hazardous wastes in the New Haven area.

    Yard Waste

Have yard waste or leaves to compost? Put your clippings in a brown leaf bag for collection. Do not mix yard waste with trash or recycling. The Department of Public Works collects yard waste along with trash and recycling on your neighborhood's collection day. Find your refuse collection day here.

Electronics and other electrical equipment should not be thrown out in the trash. If you can plug it in or if it has a battery (no light bulbs), you can recycle it at our Recycling Center (click for hours and directions).
