New Haven Police are requesting help from the public to provide information that will lead to the apprehension and arrest of the person or persons responsible for the shooting death of Alfred Garrett in 1985. Investigators have received some new information on the 17-year old case which they are working on developing.
On March 2, 1985, at approximately 11:48 p.m. in the evening, Alfred Garrett, 20, of 53 Dickerman Street, was found shot to death in the grassy area behind Helene Grant School on the corner of Goffe and Orchard Streets. Police responded to the location on the report of a person shot. They found Garrett on his back with a gunshot wound to the head.
Garrett's body was discovered by a subject walking through the rear area of the school. The area at the time was a commonly used walkway or shortcut to the Dixwell Plaza. Approximately 20 to 30 minutes prior to the discovery of his body, Garrett was last seen alive at Virginia's Chicken Shack, which at the time was located within the Dixwell Plaza. He ordered food from the location and left intending to pick it up subsequently when it was ready.
Early on in the case, investigators obtained information from subjects that a single gunshot was heard in the immediate area a short time before police arrived on the scene. Shortly after the gunshot was heard, two male subjects were seen fleeing from the rear of the Dixwell Plaza.
