On June 25, 1988, Herman Reid, a 36 year-old black male, was operating a bicycle on Columbus Avenue in New Haven. Upon approaching the intersection of Howard Avenue, he was confronted by three white males in a small red car. An argument followed and one of the passengers shot Reid. He was pronounced dead at Yale-New Haven Hospital a short time later.
During the course of the investigation into Mr. Reid's death, police learned of an unknown person who was driving a green car in the area during the time the shooting occurred. It is believed that this person may have information pertaining to this case.
Upon the request of New Haven State's Attorney Michael Dearington, then-Governor William A. O'Neil, in October of 1988, authorized a $20,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the murder of Herman Reid.
