Divisions | Motorcycle Unit Division

This unit consists of 10 patrol officers who are issued cars as well as Harley Davidson Motorcycles. Each officer has received specialized training in the operation and handling of his or her motorcycle as it pertains to police work.
When weather permits the officers cover their normal duties on motorcycles. The unit specializes in traffic enforcement and coverage of special events, such as parades. They are assigned to areas that have been determined to be trouble spots based on patterns and complaints of motor vehicle offenses. The use of motorcycles deters motorists from committing traffic violations by establishing a physical presence. Enforcement efforts are also made through the use of radar tracking devices. When violations are observed officers issue traffic citations and warnings to offending motorists. The officers are assigned to one of two shifts that provide coverage Monday through Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Officers in the Motorcycle Unit also work in conjunction with State of Connecticut Motor Vehicle Inspectors to ensure that all commercial vehicles are in compliance with safety regulations. They perform routine checks on trucks and tractor-trailers for equipment and mechanical violations.
