Hawk Watching at Lighthouse Point Park
Most people are unaware that LHPP offers some of the best hawk and songbird observation opportunities in the entire Northeast during autumn season Annually hawks, falcons, eagles, songbirds as well as some species of Butterflies and Dragonflies move through this park on their journey south.
For over 27 years, trained volunteers have kept binoculars to the sky to record in order to record this passage of birds for Scientific research. This year, over 12,000+ Birds of Prey were counted from the mid-field observation area in the park. Count period runs from September 1st to November 30th and hawk watch volunteers can be found there daily, except for rainy days.
A new addition to this migratory hotspot, the establishment of a small coastal grassland habitat , located across the street from the butterfly garden. Along with the bird feeding station, this small urban oasis, has attached a number of new species to Lighthouse Point Park.
We, at New Haven Parks and Recreation, encourage taking some time to visit Lighthouse this fall, to observe for yourself , this seasonal miracle of migration.
