The City of New Haven is offering an organized league for all levels of play. Registration is now open for our Fall Season. Sign up as an individual or as a team for one-night a week. Games are self-reffed.

Girls Basketball

Registration: begins October 8 through November 9

Program begins: week of Nov. 12th

3rd and 4th Grades
Will be combined with boys.
Practices start Tuesday November 13 from 5:30 to 7:00 at John Martinez.
Games are on Fridays at Martinez or Saturdays at Wexler Grant. Fridays are either 5:30, 6:30 or 7:30. Saturdays are either 9:00, 10:00, 11:00 or 12:00. Game schedules will be given out at practice.

5th, 6th, 7th and 8th Grades
Practices at John Martinez starting Wednesday, November 14, 5:30-7:00.
Games will be on Thursdays at Martinez: 5:30, 6:30 or 7:30. Game schedules will be given out at practice.

Cost: $20

Basketball League

Outdoor Adventure Club

Family Geocaching

Geocaching is a great activity for people of all ages and one that you can enjoy in the Parks of New Haven. Learn how to use a GPS unit and hunt for treasures in Edgewood Park. We have a small amount of GPS units for use. Fee: $10 per family

Birders Notes: East Shore Park’s “Magic Hedge”

Along the Northern boarders of East Shore Park, lined by pines trees, shrubs and the sewage treatment plant chain fence, lies an area now known as the “magic hedge”.

This site has become one of Connecticut’s best late fall and winter birding hotspots due to the availability of flying insects that are kept alive well into the fall by treated sewage pools. The insects provide a food source to lingering warblers providing some interesting finds for birders over the past few years. So far over 13 species of warblers have been spotted, at this unique site, in the month of November. Other sightings include other insect eaters like species of Swallows and Flycatchers.

Red-breasted Nuthatches, Brown Creepers, Black-capped Chickadees, Crossbills, plus assorted sparrows can also be found among the row of pine trees. A variety of Hawks can be seen hunting the fields and hedges along with an occasional Bald Eagle terrorizing the gulls and wintering ducks out on New Haven Harbor. The extreme west end of the park offers a excellent view of the harbor for gulls, wintering ducks and loons.

I encourage all to get outside and take walk through this fine park to enjoy the viewing opportunities found there.
