Level 1: Intro to Kayaking

Date and Time: September 8, 2012 - 9:30 am - 4:00 pm
Location: Lighthouse Point Park
Cost: $100 for New Haven Residents/$130 for non-residents.
Ages: 13+ (ages 13-16 must be accompanied by a paid adult).

Participants will learn to be confident and safe paddlers with the skills to participate in kayak touring in protected waters. This course will cover the standard American Canoe Association curriculum including complete equipment needs, car-topping, trip-planning and risk management. It will also cover all basic strokes for maneuvering, stability and recovery: forward, reverse, stopping, sidedraws, bow and stern rudders, and bracing. Safety components include capsizing/wet-exit, boat-swim, swimmer-rescue, deep-water assisted recoveries and self rescues.

This Migration event is funded by Audubon CT, The Community Foundation of Greater New Haven and the Board of Park Commissioners.

Event partners include: New Haven Dept. of Parks, Recreation and Trees, Friends of Lighthouse Pt. Park, New Haven Bird Club, CT Butterfly Association, Audubon Connecticut, CT Ornithological Association , CT Audubon Society, Northeast Hawk Watch, The Community Foundation and the Peabody Museum.

Intro to Archery

The Beginner Archery series of classes concentrates on range rules, safety rules and fundamentals of archery, and is taught using recurve bows. The beginner session is appropriate for those who have never shot a bow, or those with some previous experience that are seeking a refresher session.

All safety gear and equipment will be provided. (Bow, arrows, finger tab, arm guard, quiver). Class is limited to 10 students (more if a special group/camp, etc, with advance notice). Classes open to all ages (8 and above). Parents & children may shoot together.

Join us as we explore nature with stories, crafts, and walks through Edgewood Park. Children ages 2 to 5 with a parent or caregiver (younger siblings welcome). Kosher snack provided. We meet rain or shine!

Holiday Tree Sought

Missing! 55 to 70 foot tall Norway Spruce or Douglas Fir tree (not a blue spruce). The staff of the New Haven Department of Parks, Recreation & Trees has been looking for a very special tree to be used on the New Haven Green during the winter holidays. Have you seen this tree? If so, would you like to donate the tree to the city?

The donated tree will be decorated with over 30,000 lights; be the holiday centerpiece of the historic green and will be removed from your property free of charge.

Trees between 25 and 40 feet high will be considered for future years or other locations.
