Kayak Rescue Clinic
May 9, 2011,
Hillhouse HS Pool,
6 - 8 pm
Soon the days will be longer and warmer, so paddlers will be anxious to go out and put their kayaks in the water, many for the first time. But are these kayakers really ready? Kayaking has become one of the most popular sports. In fact, you can almost buy a recreational kayak anywhere, not only at specialized kayaking stores, but at wholesale clubs, discount stores and general sporting goods. This tremendous surge in kayak sales, coupled with the lack of proper equipment, training, and self-rescue techniques has resulted in many incidents and accidents. Furthermore, inadequate equipment and paddling technique has also lead to an increase of wrists, shoulder, and lower back injuries.
The Outdoor Adventure Program will be offering a series of Spring clinics that will allow you to learn about kayaking safety, and avoiding injuries.
Practice two-person and solo kayak rescue in the warm confines of a swimming pool. The class covers wet exits, assisted re-entry, re-entry using a paddle float and the fundamentals that will help you learn to Eskimo roll. Boats and all safety gear are provided.

also houses numerous amphibians and reptiles for educational programs. The Center has a partnership with the Barnard Environmental Magnet School across the street. The nature
center allows access from the school to the park using a walking bridge that goes over one of the busiest roads in New Haven. This allows students access to play fields and ability to
