CITY OF NEW HAVEN PARKS DEPARTMENT
Accepting Applications for the Following Non-Tested
Seasonal Temporary Positions:

PROGRAM AIDE, SEASONAL, TEMPORARY
SALARY: $7.75-$9.75 per hour
REMOVAL DATE: JULY 31, 2008

NATURE OF WORK:

The individual will assist the Program Specialist and Community Recreation Supervisor supervise and conduct classes, provide periods of instruction, keep accurate records and all other related duties. Assignments of the Program Aide may include: Arts & Crafts Instructor, Assistant Camp Counselor, Canoe/Kayaking Leaders, Locker Room Attendant, and Lunch Aide.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

High school graduate, or currently enrolled high school student 16 years of age or older, with the ability and interest to assist instructors, coaches and officials in a wide variety of supervised activity. Ability to work with groups ranging from grades K – 12. Apply at Parks Department, 720 Edgewood Avenue, Monday through Friday, 9 am to 4pm.


PROGRAM SPECIALIST, SEASONAL, TEMPORARY
SALARY: $10.00-$22.00 per hour
REMOVAL DATE: JULY 31, 2008

NATURE OF WORK:

The individual will supervise and conduct classes, provide periods of instruction in coaching or officiating, order supplies, keep accurate records and work directly with the Community Recreation Supervisor in related activities. Assignments of the Program Specialist may include: Aquatics Director, Arts & Crafts Instructor, Camp Director, Camp Nurse/EMT, Chess Instructor, Dance Instructor, Naturalist, Outdoor Adventure/Canoe/Kayaking Instructors, Photography Instructor, Seasonal Park Manager, Site Supervisor, Sports & Athletic Coaching, Officiating & Instructing, Van Driver.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

At least one year as a Recreation, Art or Physical Education major in an accredited college or university, or equivalent experience in a municipal school or recreational programming. Ability to work with groups ranging from grades K – 12. Van Driver requires current valid driver’s license. Apply at Parks Department, 720 Edgewood Avenue, Monday through Friday, 9 am to 4pm.


LIFEGUARD or WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR (WSI), SEASONAL, TEMPORARY
SALARY $9.00-$17.00 per hour
REMOVAL DATE: JULY 31, 2008

NATURE OF WORK

Supervise and teach swimming & floatation techniques to children & adults.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Lifeguard: 16 years or older, Current certification in the following areas: Lifeguard, CPR, First Aid. Additional Requirements for Water Safety Instructor: 17 years or older, Current CPR for the Professional Rescuer and WSI Certifications. CARETAKER, SEASONAL, TEMPORARY
SALARY: $8.00 - $9.00 per hour
REMOVAL DATE: JULY 31, 2008

NATURE OF WORK:

This is semi-skilled and unskilled work in the maintenance of the park system. Work involves the operation of light equipment (i.e., lawnmower), and vehicles as well as the performance of light and heavy labor tasks. Work is performed under the direct supervision of a supervisor and is reviewed through observation of results.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Graduation from high school, a minimum of 3 months experience in the use of hand tools and light equipment (i.e., lawnmower); or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the knowledge, abilities and skills as stated in the job description.

SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENT:

Possession of a valid State of Connecticut driver’s license.
