Congratulations New Haven for winning NBC Connecticut’s Golden Local competition! In our challenge against West Hartford we were victorious with 53% of the vote and now hold the title of Best Shopping Area in Connecticut! As you wrap up your holiday shopping make sure to stop by New Haven’s unique shops to find something that special gift you’ve been looking for! This award further demonstrates that in New Haven, “It all happens here!”
As the culinary, cultural and entertainment capital of Connecticut, residents of New Haven have a lot to brag about. Between our world-class dining, museums, theatres and shops, there is always something to do here in the Elm City. As we gear up for a new year, now is a great time to reflect on our City and what we love about it. I know why I love my hometown, but I want to hear from all of you! That’s why the City of New Haven is kicking-off an “I Love New Haven” video contest today. The individual or group with the best video will be recognized at the 2010 Inauguration Ceremony on January 1st, where their video will be shown as a part of the program. To enter the contest, submit a video no more than two minutes in length to firstname.lastname@example.org about why you love New Haven. The contest will run from now through Tuesday, December 29th.
Here’s what else is happening in New Haven:
Worthington Hooker School
Earlier today, I attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the grand opening of the new Worthington Hooker School on Whitney Avenue. The construction of this new school was 10 years in the making and involved the dedication and support of many members of our community. I would like to thank the parents, staff and administrators who helped to make this new state-of-the-art facility a reality for our students.
Construction Workforce Initiative Press Conference
Today at 2 p.m., I attended a press conference at Roberto Clemente School to celebrate the success of the City’s Construction Workforce Initiative and to kick-off the next round of application distributions. Despite difficult economic times, New Haven is currently experiencing one of the highest periods of construction in our City’s history. The City’s Commission on Equal Opportunity (CEO) works vigorously to enforce contract compliance and hiring laws, resulting in New Haven having some of the best numbers nationwide in terms of diversity and job creation on City-sponsored sites. At this press conference, CEO announced that City-sponsored sites are currently maintaining a workforce that is 30% minority, 25% New Haven residents and 8% women, all of which are well above the national average.
National Spotlight on New Haven Business
Congratulations to Jeff Blasius, Ben Berkowitz, Miles Lasater and Kam Lasater for gaining national attention in BusinessWeek for their startup company SeeClickFix. This New Haven business was featured in the magazine as one of “America’s Most Promising Startups” last week. Congratulations and keep up the good work!
