The internationally renowned Pilot Pen tennis tournament will begin this week! As part of the Olympus US Open Series, the Pilot Pen will bring some of the world’s top tennis players to New Haven from August 15th to August 23rd. When the athletes aren’t competing, they’ll be dining at some of our City’s best restaurants as part of the Mayor’s Passport to Downtown Dining. Be sure to make your reservations early for a chance to dine alongside your favorite players! For a complete list of participating restaurants, tournament information, and to purchase tickets to the Pilot Pen, please visit www.pilotpentennis.com or call 1-888-99-PILOT.
With the school year quickly approaching, I’d like to acknowledge some of our community’s youth organizations for their successful summer programs:
New Haven Age Group Track Club
The New Haven Age Group Track Club traveled to the Amateur Athletic Union Junior Olympics in Detroit earlier this month, bringing home four gold medals! Congratulations to Danay Rivers for winning the 800 and 1,500 meter race, Kellie Davis for her win in the 3,000 meter race and anchoring the four by eight relay team, and to all the coaches and team-members of the New Haven Age Group Track Club.
New Haven Drill and Drum Squad
Congratulations to the Nation Drill Squad and Drum Corp for capturing first place in the Elks World National Drill and Drum Competition! The competition featured bands from all over the country and the squads were evaluated by military judges in two categories: Fancy Trick and Precision. The group will hold a press conference on Monday, August 11th at 5:00 p.m. at the Dixwell Community House where they will perform their award-winning act.
Celebrating Our City’s Youth
On Thursday, August 14th from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., the Department of Youth and the New Haven Independent will be hosting a celebration on the New Haven Green to honor leadership and hard work in our Youth Community. Youth organizations throughout the City have been given the opportunity to nominate individuals from their workplace who have made positive and safe life choices and these young people will be honored at Thursday’s event. Special thanks to the restaurants throughout the City that have donated nearly 30 pizzas to this event!
Youth @ Work Awards Ceremony
On Friday, August 15th from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Youth @ Work will be holding an awards ceremony for youth who took part in the program’s summer session. This event will take place at Wilbur Cross High School. Students who have been nominated by their supervisors for outstanding work performance will be honored with the “Employee of the Summer” award.
Here’s what’s happening at the New Haven Free Public Library this week:
Summer Reading Program
This Friday, August 15th at 2:00 p.m., the New Haven Free Public Library will be celebrating the completion of the summer reading program, “Catch the Reading Bug.” The event will be held in the children’s room of the Main Branch and will feature Paul Miller of the Flow Circus Variety Arts who will juggle and perform magic. There will be games and food as well as prizes for program participants.
I hope you have a happy and healthy week!
Very truly yours,
John DeStefano, Jr.
