    Office Of The Mayor
    Weekly message

    Dear friends,

    With the holiday season in full swing it is a little quieter than usual Ė and thatís okay.

    The week kicks-off with students from the James Hillhouse High School showing us all what it really means to be champs. As you may know, the team won the Class M State Championship a few weeks ago. Well, they also have the winning moves off the field. Cheerleaders, two football captains and six senior football players will go to Yale-New Haven Hospital Monday to donate 50 footballs, worth $1,500, to the Toy Chest, a service that the Hospital provides to the families of children who are ill.

    Speaking of being ill, the City of New Havenís Health Department is holding flu vaccinations in order to keep you healthy this flu season. In general, anyone who wants to reduce their chances of getting the flu should get a shot. It is very important for older people, young children, and people with serious health conditions to get a shot. For more information call the New Haven Health Department Flu Health Department info-line at 203.946.7878, the Hill Health Center at 203.503.3000, the Fair Haven Health Center at 203.777.7411, or the Dixwell Health Center at 203.503.3420.

    Finally, this Thursday a new General Order from the Police Chief will take effect - establishing the departmentís policy and procedures concerning citizenship status, enforcement of federal immigration laws and the disclosure of confidential information.

    The formal policy is meant to encourage all residents, regardless of immigration status, to feel comfortable reporting crime and talking with the police. Specifically, it formalizes procedures that New Haven Police officers are to follow, including:

    ē Police officers shall not inquire about a personís immigration status unless investigating criminal activity;

    ē It shall be the policy of the department not to inquire about the immigration status of crime victims, witnesses, or others who call or approach the police seeking assistance.

    If victims arenít comfortable talking to police, we canít ensure and maintain civil neighborhoods. This is a smart extension of community policing that will make all residents safer. For more information, read the news release at cityofnewhaven.com or email Derek Slap at dslap@newhavenct.net for a copy of the General Order.

    I hope you have a happy and healthy week Ė and a great holiday!

    Very truly yours,

    John DeStefano

    Mayor
