    Office Of The Mayor
    Dear Friends

This Thursday at 6:30 p.m. I will be presenting my proposed 2009-2010 budget to the Board of Aldermen. Residents, the media and anyone interested in learning more about our budget decisions are encouraged to join us in the Aldermanic Chambers on Thursday evening. While we are operating in a difficult economic environment and we are forced to make difficult choices, this budget will speak to our goals as a City and how we can work together to overcome the challenges ahead. I look forward to seeing you there.

I’ll be in the community in March and April delivering the same budget presentation to residents. Next week in the Monday Message I’ll provide you with a list of dates, times and locations so that you can plan to meet me at a location near you to discuss this year’s budget.

    Fire Inspectors Swearing-In

Fire inspectors will be sworn in at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday in my conference room in City Hall.

Seniors Knitting for Yale New Haven Hospital Patients

A group of seniors at the East Shore Senior Center have been crocheting and knitting blankets for Yale New Haven Hospital since November for elderly patients being discharged from the hospital. The seniors are proudly displaying a number of lovely blankets at the senior center that they’ve created for the hospital’s elderly patients. The creative participants who are knitting and crocheting these items are all seniors themselves ranging in age from their early 60's to 95 years of age. This group meets weekly from 1- 3:30. The media is encouraged to visit these seniors as they create these thoughtful items to help comfort elderly patients.

    This Week’s Green-Tip:

Use low-flow showerheads instead of regular showerheads to cut back water consumption further. Look for showerheads that use 1.5 - 2 gallons per minute, often marked with the EPA WaterSense label. A typical family of 4 will save over 20,000 gallons per year, enough to fill two aboveground swimming pools.

Here's What's Happening in New Haven Public Schools this Week:

Townsend Ave. Third graders will perform "Follow the Drinking Gourd" in honor of Black History Month in the school auditorium.

Thursday, February 26, 2009, 10:00 a.m.-noon at Hill Regional Career High School, 140 Legion Ave, CMT (Connecticut Mastery Test) Pep Rally for Hill Central Music Academy 3rd through 8th grade students (300 to 500 students). This is a yearly special event to get students pumped up/excited about doing well on the test by featuring recording artist from NY, NJ, New Haven and Bridgeport to entertain and encourage our students. Students are greeted by the artist and sign autographs as well as promoted higher learning/educational values.

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 2009 6:00-7:00 PM: KATHERINE BRENNAN SCHOOL, 200 Wilmot St., Two nationally known authors, Jerry Craft, author of "Mama's Boyz" and Irene Smalls, author of "Jonathan and his Mommy," "Irene and the Nickel," and many more. Both writers will share their works and how they compose with us. The evening includes storytelling, music, movement and cartoon making.

To save room on the City’s server space, the contents of the MMM will no longer be emailed. However, you will receive a weekly reminder with a link to the City’s website encouraging to read the message on-line every week.

I hope you have a happy and healthy week.

    Very truly yours,

    John DeStefano, Jr.
