This is an exciting week in New Haven as we celebrate 4th of July with the annual fireworks show! This celebration is just one more New Haven tradition that brings together families throughout the City. With so many great cultural, artistic and culinary experiences available in our City, thereís no doubt that in fact, it all happens here! Events like this represent New Haven as the cultural capital of the region and weíre excited to welcome visitors to join us. I look forward to a great show and encourage residents to attend this yearís IKEA New Haven Fourth of July fireworks display, scheduled for 9 p.m. at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Park at Long Wharf.
Here are some other great events happening in the upcoming weeks:
Mayorís Night In
On the first Tuesday of every month, I hold Mayorís Night In at City Hall. This event is an opportunity for residents to meet with me to discuss you your questions, concerns, and suggestions for our City. I encourage residents to stop by next Tuesday, July 7th at 5 p.m.
Blues, Berries, & Jam
From July 8th to August 26th, New Haven has just the thing to get you through those summer Wednesdays: a farmerís market and blues concert series. City Seed Farmerís Market will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and the live blues music will begin at noon and run until 2 p.m. on the Green.
Music on the Green presented by Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven
Grab some blankets, your family and friends and head out to the Green to experience New Havenís free summer concert line-up. The series will feature three consecutive Saturdays of free concerts beginning July 11th with a special performance by the New Haven Symphony Orchestra; a concert engagement by Sister Hazel on July 18th; and Jeffrey Osborne for the final concert on July 25th. Concerts begin at 6 p.m.
LEAPís Annual Read-In
I invite residents to join me at the LEAP Read-In on July 2nd on the Green from 10 a.m. to noon. At this event, LEAP children and youth will participate in group and individual reading. The community is invited to read on the Green or listen to a story as LEAP celebrates the importance of reading.
Mayor's Green Tip
As you prepare for the 4th of July, keep in mind these tips for an environmentally-friendly party: Set out a separate recycling container for bottles and cans, don't use disposable dishware or utensils, and use local food when possible. Check the schedule for the Farmers' Markets at www.cityseed.org.
