Hooker School Dedication
A lovely ceremony took place yesterday in honor of the dedication of the Hooker School. This $12.9 million renovation created a wonderful new environment in which students can learn and prosper. The renovated Hooker School site houses 173 students in grades Kindergarten through 2. The exterior of the school was fully restored, including the original brickwork. We added an elevator to the school along with free standing units in the school’s 20-foot-wide corridors to free up additional space in classrooms. This is the 24th school construction project we have completed. That means there are 5 more in the construction process, another 5 in the design process and the final 5 in the planning process.
Holocaust Memorial Exhibit
Yesterday, the directors of the New Haven Holocaust Memorial unveiled their traveling oral history exhibit. The exhibit, which features audio oral history components, will travel from City Hall to the city’s libraries and eventually to the State Capitol to tell the story of the memorial and the individuals who gave their time and resources toward its creation. Marking the 30th anniversary of the Memorial, this exhibit will share how New Haven became a pioneer by being the first city to give public land toward the creation of a Holocaust remembrance site.
In the week ahead...

Universal Health Care Rally and Hartford Bus Caravan
I am proud to have fought for universal health care not only for the people of New Haven but as a necessity for our neighbors throughout the state. Every family and every individual deserves affordable access to quality medical care. For this reason, I am supporting the “healthcare4every1” rally that will take place at the State Capitol in Hartford this Saturday. I want all New Haven residents who can attend to make their way to Hartford to stand behind Universal Health Care initiatives. In order to help facilitate this, I am providing three buses so that New Haven resident can travel to Hartford for this event. If you are interested in getting on the bus please call 203-639-0550. In advance, there will be a press conference on Wednesday at 4pm in front of the C-Town Supermarket on Dixwell Avenue. Please come out to show your support, register to attend Saturday’s activities and pick up your healthcare4every1 t-shirt to wear at the Hartford rally.
Democracy School Graduation
On Wednesday, Democracy School students will be graduating from their 6 session program. Twenty-six New Haven residents took part in this civic education opportunity this year. Graduates spent time learning about the various departments of the City’s government and gained a comprehensive understanding of how the City operates. I will be presenting graduation certificates to the individuals that successfully completed the program at 5pm on Wednesday. Congratulations to all graduates!
I wish you a happy and healthy week.
Very truly yours,
John DeStefano, Jr.
