    Office Of The Mayor
    Dear Friends:

    “LIVING WITHOUT DRUGS”

Tomorrow, we will celebrate United Nations International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. Our Commission on Substance Abuse Policy and Prevention, in conjunction with New Haven County’s Drug Free Marshals, will host an event at 11:30am in City Hall entitled “Living Without Drugs.” This event will honor the winner of the 2007 Drug Free Marshals Essay Contest- a 9 year-old student who attends Vincent Mauro Elementary School. The winning essay “Anything is Possible When you are Drug Free” will be read and drug prevention and abuse materials will be disseminated to participants. In 1987 the United Nations General Assembly decided to observe June 26th as the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking expressing its determination to strengthen action and co-operation at the international, national and regional levels working toward the goal of a drug-free society.

COMMENCEMENT DAY & EVENT TO HONOR SELECTED GRADUATES

Tomorrow is also commencement day for New Haven’s high schools. I congratulate all students who will graduate tomorrow. These 986 students represent great milestones for New Haven Public Schools. We are proud to report that 86.2% of our graduates will go on to college. This impressive rate surpasses the national average which in 2005 was 69%. In celebration of these accomplishments I will honor 7 students from different high schools at 1:30pm at the Sound School. These 7 students all have very different backgrounds but most have overcome their own personal obstacles to make it across the stage in cap and gown tomorrow. I will speak with these students about the influences in their lives that helped them achieve success and about what we can do to improve opportunities for other young people in our City who may be experiencing challenges of their own.

    INDIANA JONES FESTIVAL

Tomorrow on the New Haven Green we will celebrate the taping of part of the new Indiana Jones film in our City. Starting at 5pm you’ll be able to enjoy fun for the whole family. This celebration will be a chance to enjoy free activities, sample some one-time restaurant promotions on Temple Street or just relax and listen to some live music on Temple Plaza. The evening will be complete with a special screening of "Indiana Jones and The Raiders of The Lost Ark" on the Green at dusk. We hope you’ll be there!

FREE MOSQUITO REPELLANT AND INFORMATION ABOUT THE WEST NILE VIRUS

As we enjoy the arrival of summer, we should also be aware of the risks of mosquitoes and the West Nile Virus. Along with our Department of Health and our Department of Elderly Services I’ll be hosting an event at the Dixwell/ Newhallville Senior Center (located at 255 Goffe Street). We’ll be distributing mosquito repellant and discussing how to protect yourself from contracting the West Nile Virus. This event will take place at 1:30pm this Wednesday, June 27.

I hope you enjoy a healthy and happy week.

    Very truly yours,

    John DeStefano, Jr.
