Today is the final day to pay your taxes without penalty. The first installments of Real Estate, Personal Property and Special Services District Tax and the total Motor Vehicle Tax on the Grand List of October 1, 2009 came due on July 1, 2010. Beginning tomorrow, interest will be charged from the original date of July 1, 2010. Church Street between Chapel Street and Elm Street has been reclassified as a "tow free" zone throughout the remainder of the day, so that tax payers of the City of New Haven can come into City Hall to pay their taxes/parking tags without the fear of being towed for any delinquencies. The Office of the Tax Collector will be open until 6 p.m. tonight.
Here’s what else is happening in New Haven:
Back to School Rally
On Friday, August 6th from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., WYBC and New Haven Public Schools will be hosting a Back to School Rally at the Citywide Field House, 480 Sherman Parkway. Various City and community organizations will be providing educational materials and program information at this event and the first 500 attendees will receive a backpack filled with school supplies. The event will also feature entertainment including jugglers, magicians and games.
Mosquitoes are most active during the months of July and August, and residents are encouraged to take precautions to reduce the risk of being infected with West Nile Virus. To avoid being bitten by mosquitoes, follow these three easy tips: make sure your screens are installed properly and not torn; do not allow standing water to collect for long periods of time; and use mosquito repellent whenever you spend time outside. If you are a senior in need of mosquito repellent, please contact your local senior center.
Pilot Pen Tennis Tournament
The annual Pilot Pen tennis tournament is right around the corner. As part of the Olympus US Open Series, the Pilot Pen will bring some of the world’s top tennis players to New Haven from August 20th through August 28th. To purchase tickets, please visit www.pilotpentennis.com or call 1-888-99-PILOT.
On Wednesday, August 4th at 1:30 p.m., the City of New Haven will be hosting a media briefing at City Hall. This is an opportunity for members of the media to meet with representatives from the City of New Haven to discuss upcoming events and programs.
Try to reduce the amount of time you keep your refrigerator door open, especially in hot weather. Decide what you want to get, then open and close the door quickly.
I hope you have a happy and healthy week!
Very truly yours,
John DeStefano, Jr.
