There are a lot of exciting things happening in New Haven this week. In addition to reading my Monday message every week, now you can view it online here.
We’re looking forward to a great labor day weekend including the annual road race which i encourage you to come out to next Monday starting at 8:15 am on the new haven green. This is a great event with activities for the whole family.
Wrapping up from Pilot Pen Tennis
Now that the Pilot Pen Tennis tournament has wrapped up, we’ll be holding a press conference at city hall at 1pm Tuesday to discuss the event’s impact on the city. We’ll talk about the economic impact and what the pilot pen brings to our community in terms of programming, tourism and entertainment.
Announcement of 2nd round of Youth Capacity Building grants
In its second cycle, the Mayor’s Youth Initiative capacity building grants will be announced on Wednesday. We’ll be distributing $250,000 in grants to a number of community agencies and organizations to help them expand their services to youth. In May, we gave out our first $250,000 worth of grants helping organizations serve an additional 400 new haven youth. At our media event we’ll recognize grant recipients for their work and commitment to the young people of new haven.
Senior day #3
On Wednesday we’ll welcome Dixwell and Newhallville seniors to downtown. I’ll welcome them at 10:30 that morning and send them off on their historical tour of new haven followed by their visit to the farmer’s market in front of city hall. Senior days are coordinated by the department of elderly services. There are 4 senior days every august.
Next week, on Tuesday September 4th, I’ll host Mayor’s night-in. This is your opportunity to come down to city hall from 5-6pm to talk to me about your concerns and your questions about what’s happening in our city. Come down and join me.
Start of school
New haven public schools kick off a new school year next week. Grades 1-12 start on Wednesday the 5th while pre-k and kindergarten students start on Thursday the 6th. Research shows that kids should start their school routines a week or two before school starts. So, this means no more sleeping in or staying up too late. Get your kids in the habit of waking up at the time they would need to get up during the school year. Make sure to come out to orientations to meet principals and teachers and to get a head start on what your children will be learning this year. Parent involvement is key—we look forward to seeing you in our schools.
Labor Day weekend
We’re gearing up for a great three-day weekend. While you may be out enjoying some time off or celebrating with friends and family, make sure to drive responsibly, have a designated driver and look our for your safety and the safety of others. New haven police will be out in full-force with a number of random DUI check-points. Make this a great and safe holiday weekend!
I hope you have a happy and healthy week!
Very truly yours,
John DeStefano, Jr.
