    Office Of The Mayor
    Dear Friends

As summer winds down, there are still plenty of exciting things happening in New Haven. The Pilot Pen tennis tournament kicks-off this Friday and will continue through August 29th. For a complete schedule of Pilot Pen events and to purchase tickets, please visit: www.pilotpentennis.com. In addition to Pilot Pen, the annual New Haven Jazz Festival will also be taking place this weekend. I encourage residents to come to the New Haven Green on Saturday from 3 to 9 p.m. to take advantage of this opportunity to experience world-class entertainment free of charge!

Here’s what else is happening in New Haven:

Protecting Vulnerable Populations in the City Against West Nile Virus

On Wednesday, August 19th at 11:30 a.m., I will be holding a press event and distributing free mosquito repellent at Atwater Senior Center. I, along with Health Department Director Bill Quinn, will be educating residents about the West Nile Virus and offering tips on how to minimize the risk of mosquito bites and protect against the West Nile Virus.

    Green Contractors Training School

I will be visiting New Haven’s Green Contractors Training School on Thursday, August 20th at 5:30 p.m. The purpose of this training school is to offer New Haven contractors the opportunity to become educated in environmentally-conscious building practices that will help to keep our City green.

Free Admission Day at Yale Peabody Museum

August 29th from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. is free admission day at Yale Peabody Museum. Take advantage of this opportunity to tour two current exhibitions, “Sustainable Choices” and “Darwin: 150 Years of Evolutionary Thinking.” For more information, please visit: www.peabody.yale.edu.

    Back to School Rally

The New Haven Public Schools will be hosting a Back to School Rally for kids and parents at the New Haven Athletic Center, 480 Sherman Parkway on August 29th from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. At this event, various government agencies and community organizations will be handing out information and answering questions about their services. There will also be food, fun activities and giveaways!

    Mayor’s Green Tip

Rapid acceleration and braking can reduce fuel economy by one-third. By obeying the speed limit and avoiding these risky driving behaviors, you are not only creating safer streets but also reducing your fuel consumption.

Is someone you know interested in receiving the Mayor's Monday Message? To join this list, please send your name and email address to: jmayorga@newhavenct.net. An opportunity may exist down the line to receive messages specific to your neighborhood. For this purpose, in your email, please tell us what ward you live in.

The Mayor's Monday Message list is not shared with any outside groups and is used solely for the purpose of delivering timely information about issues and events in the City from the Mayor's office to your inbox.

I hope you have a happy and healthy week!

    Very truly yours,

    John DeStefano, Jr.
