Senior Days Downtown
Over the next two weeks the Department of Elderly Services will be sponsoring ďSenior Days Downtown.Ē On August 15th, 16th, 22nd and 29th New Haven seniors can enjoy historic tours of downtown, visits to farmers markets and the vibrant attractions of the Cityís downtown. Chief Ortiz Visits High Point, NC
This week Police Chief Francisco Ortiz will be visiting High Point, North Carolina to learn more about a model that has been successful in that city to combat crime and turn around the lives of offenders. As part of New Havenís strong community policing model, the Chief and his team are constantly looking at innovations in policing nationwide to regularly update New Havenís strategies and achieve safe and welcoming neighborhoods throughout the City. On Thursday at 4pm weíll hold a new conference at the police department at 1 Union Avenue to discuss the Chiefís findings and how the High Point model can be tailored to fit New Havenís needs.
Youth @ Work Wraps up for the Summer
On Friday, at 11:30 am, Iíll be attending a lunch celebration in honor of the 1200 New Haven youth who participate in this summerís Youth at Work program. Weíll present awards, discuss how the program went this summer and celebrate the hard work of our teens and the support of great employers who partnered with us. This event will take place in the auditorium of Hill House High School.

Italian Concert at Wooster Square Park
The City of New Haven and the Columbus Day Parade Committee invite you to an evening of contemporary Italian music by the world-renowned Emozione band. This free concert will take place on the Columbus Green at Wooster Square Park on Saturday, August 18 from 7 until 10 in the evening. Bring the whole family. Congratulations Coach Torrellas
Rich Torrellas, the track coach at James Hillhouse High School, has been selected by USA Track & Field to the 2008 Olympic Games coaching staff. Torrellas is believed to be the first Puerto Rican (and Hispanic) assigned as a head of any U.S. Olympic Team. USA Track and Field (USATF) is the national governing body of track and field in the United States. Olympic Head Coaches and Managers attend major international competitions such as the World Indoor and Outdoor Championships as well as engage in multiple visits to the Olympic site (in this case China) in preparation for the Olympic Games over a 20 month period.
