The City of New Haven was recently recognized by the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives—Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI) for our commitment to and achievements in climate protection and sustainability. Specifically, New Haven’s efforts to develop a local sustainability action plan were recognized at the ICLEI Local Action Summit in Washington, D.C. Congratulations to the Office of Sustainability for this honor!
In an effort to maintain our commitment to sustainability, the City of New Haven will be kicking-off a neighborhood recycling competition tomorrow, Wednesday, October 13 with a press conference at Mauro-Sheridan School, 191 Fountain Street. Join me at 1 p.m. to learn about the details of the competition and how your neighborhood could be the next to receive new toters! On Saturday, October 16 at 11 a.m., I will be joining IKEA and the Urban Resources Initiative for a tree planting event to celebrate IKEA’s National Tree Planting Day and the City’s 10K Tree Campaign. Stop by IKEA at 11 a.m. to learn more about the 10K Tree Campaign and how you can request a street tree.
On Tuesday, October 19, the City of New Haven will be conducting a community canvass in the Dixwell and Newhallville sections of the city, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Community canvasses are an opportunity for residents to meet with City department and agency heads to discuss your questions, concerns and suggestions—all without leaving your home.

Staying healthy can sometimes be a challenge but protecting yourself from the flu doesn’t have to be. As flu season starts, protect yourself and those around you but getting your flu vaccine. The CDC recommends people 6 months of age and older to get the flu vaccine. The New Haven Health Department will be hosting Flu Vaccine Clinics throughout the month of October at City Hall, the Senior Centers and the Health Department.
