    Office Of The Mayor
    Book Drive

Beginning this week, City Hall is sponsoring a children’s book drive in partnership with New Haven Reads, a local non-profit aiming to improve literacy and encourage reading among New Haven children. This year’s drive aims to collect 50,000 books; City Hall has a book collection station in the Mayor’s Office, located on the second floor at 165 Church Street. Donations can also be dropped off at New Haven Reads’ Dixwell location at 45 Bristol Street. Collections are available for large donations of over 200 books.

Founded in 2001, New Haven Reads provides free after-school tutoring to local students and maintains a community book bank. Their commitment to improving literacy and fostering an appreciation for reading aligns closely with the goals of this administration, as we work to close Connecticut’s academic achievement gap. Revitalizing our public school system is an integral part of this vision, and work is currently underway to make improvements; new principals and teachers are revitalizing our schools as we think of new ways forward. That said, independent after-school programs like New Haven Reads provide crucial services to students, helping them perform to the best of their abilities. We thank New Haven Reads for their work and wish them the best of luck with this initiative.

It was also an exciting week for New Haven Healthcare, as Yale-New Haven Hospital was ranked as the best hospital in Connecticut by U.S. News & World Report. Providing unparalleled care to New Haven-area residents, Yale-New Haven Hospital is also the city’s second largest employer. Congratulations to everyone at Yale-New Haven Hospital – keep up the good work!

The annual Music On The Green festival begins this weekend, with the first of two headliners. On Saturday evening, The Temptations will take to the stage on the Green. The concert will begin with opening acts at 7 p.m., followed by The Temptations at 8 p.m. For information on all events going on around the city this weekend, please visit the city's new events calendar .

I hope you have a great week.

    Sincerely,

    Mayor Toni N. Harp
