New Haven Launches New Season of Tow Progam Delinquent Taxes and Tickets
(10/13/2009) The Office of the Tax Collector is announcing the start of its Motor Vehicle towing program on Tuesday, October 13, 2009 for delinquent motor vehicle property taxes. While the City tows motor vehicles with tax delinquencies throughout the year, next Tuesday’s towing list will include delinquent motor vehicles with unpaid taxes due from July 1, 2009.
Towed vehicles will not be released back to the owner until all property taxes and associated parking tickets for the owner are paid in full.
Over 18,000 demand letters have been issued over the past month resulting in more than 12,000 tax warrants totaling approximately $2.5M in delinquent motor vehicle taxes that were due on 7/1/09. Taxpayers have received sufficient notice of such delinquency and the City is ready to proceed with towing.
Past towing efforts have proved successful for the City; last year’s motor vehicle towing program has contributed positively to the City’s overall collection rate of 98.5%.
Residents can check to see if they are at risk of being towed by visiting the City’s website at www.cityofnewhaven.com.
