    Office Of The Mayor

(5/27/2014) New Haven – Mayor Toni N. Harp, in the wake of final budget approval by the Board of Alders last night, today praised the conscientious effort by the New Haven legislative delegation to secure additional state funding to provide tax relief for city residents. Mayor Harp said that during this year’s budget-adjustment session, New Haven lawmakers successfully delivered some $2.3 million more in financial assistance from the state.

This net amount of additional state funding includes approximately $1.9 million more from the Payment In Lieu Of Taxes (PILOT) grant program and about $1 million more through a Municipal Revenue Sharing grant. A reduction of some $600,000 in another municipal grant program explains the $2.3 million net amount.

“As important as it remains to deliver essential services and necessary programs for New Haven residents it is our responsibility to do so with a minimal impact on property taxpayers. These additional state funds provide direct tax relief for home and business owners in New Haven,” Mayor Harp said. “On behalf of our entire city I want to extend this measure of appreciation to delegation members for their diligent effort.”

Mayor Harp commended New Haven lawmakers for their support of state aid to the city throughout legislative deliberations and then subsequently, throughout negotiations with Governor Malloy’s budget office. The revised, enacted state budget for Fiscal Year 2015 reflects broad-based support for New Haven in both the legislative and executive branches, Mayor Harp said.

“I also want to thank Governor Malloy for his unwavering support of Connecticut cities – including New Haven – in this year’s state budget,” Mayor Harp added. “As a former, 14-year mayor of Stamford, Governor Malloy knows first-hand how challenging it can be to provide for a city’s needs while keeping the annual budget in check.”

“I’m also grateful to the Alders who supported the budget now in place for the year beginning July 1 and I appreciate all their work these months to prepare this spending plan,” Mayor Harp said.
