NEW HAVEN CELEBRATES THE SEASON WITH ANNUAL TREE LIGHTING

(11/18/2010) New Haven, Conn. - The City of New Haven will present its annual holiday tree lighting ceremony on the historic Green Thursday, December 2. The free family-fun event kicks off downtown’s holiday season at 5:30pm with live performances by Katherine Brennan School, Mauro/Sheridan School, Nathan Hale School, Bishop Woods School and the New Haven Chorale. The program will be co-hosted by WTNH News Channel 8/MyTV 9’s own Gil Simmons. Santa, Ronald McDonald and other special guests will lend a hand to illuminate the tree.

“New Haven’s tree lighting celebration is a regional tradition. Thanks to the generosity of People’s United Bank and the hard work of our Department of Park, Recreation and Trees, bright lights will illuminate the New Haven Green again this year,” said Mayor John DeStefano, Jr. “I encourage residents and visitors to come out for the tree lighting and stick around to enjoy the world-class shopping, arts and cuisine that New Haven is known for.”

This year’s tree sponsored by Peoples United Bank is a 65-foot-tall Norway spruce donated by John Gagne in Northford. The tree will be illuminated with 20,000 sparkling energy-efficient LED lights in an array of colors. The change to LED lights, has reduced the City’s energy costs.

From 4-8pm there will be a host of free activities for children to enjoy– carousel rides, mini-car rides, letter writing to Santa with an express mail box for deliveries to the North Pole and the opportunity to be part of the “Alpine Safari” by riding on one of four mechanical animals, free of charge. There will also be holiday crafts, popcorn and free hayrides around the Green for all to enjoy. After the tree is lit, children can visit and take photos with Santa until 7:30PM.

The event is presented by the City of New Haven Department of Cultural Affairs and the Department of Parks, Recreation and Trees. The children’s activities are sponsored by Yale New Haven Hospital and Covidien.

In the case of extreme inclement weather, the tree lighting will be held Friday, December 3. Carousel and mini-car rides will be available on the Green until Saturday, December 4. Hours: Friday, December 3 from 4-8pm; Saturday, December 4 from 12-4pm.
