    Office Of The Mayor

(10/28/2011) (New Haven) - The City of New Haven Department of Parks, Recreation and Trees is proud to announce the start of the 2011-12 ice skating season at the Walker Ice Rink, 1080 State Street. The municipal rink has been in existence for over 40 years and remains a vital part of New Havenís Parks System. It has been given a new appearance inside that is sure to delight New Haven area residents with murals of the New Haven landscape that include East Rock Park, West Rock, Lighthouse Park, and Fort Nathan Hale. In an effort to make the rink more enjoyable for patrons, the City of New Haven has installed new lighting at the facility and updated the fleet of rental skates.

As an integral part of New Haven sports and culture, the Walker Rink offers a variety of activities and opportunities for fun on the ice. There are Learn-to-Skate classes serving individuals ages 4 through adult. For those already involved in skill programs, the rink offers freestyle ice, stick time, and slots for hockey team practices and games. Unique to the Walker Rink is the CardioSkate program; a 50 minute workout that will elevate participants heart rates and tones muscle through interval training on the ice.

The Ralph Walker Rink offers special rates for New Haven schools that wish to hold ice skating fundraisers to supplement the school budget and is available for birthday or corporate parties. Area businesses offer discounted food services for these events and patrons may rent the entire rink for a private party.

All programs are at available at rates that are extremely competitive compared to area rink fees due to the non-profit status. Rates are based on New Haven resident and non-resident status. For more information about programs, hours of operation and rates at the Ralph Walker Rink call 203-946-8007 or visit the City of New Haven website at http://www.cityofnewhaven.com/Parks/ParksInformation/walker.asp or www.elmcityskatingclub.com.
