NEW HAVEN POLICE OFFICER IN CRITICAL CONDITION AFTER WEDNESDAY NIGHT ACCIDENT ON CONGRESS AVE.
(7/26/2007) NEW HAVEN- The New Haven Police Department responded to an accident at 9:27 pm Wednesday to find 36 year-old Willie Ponteau, a New Haven Police Officer, and his passenger, struck by a driver in a pick-up truck on Congress Avenue. Ponteau and his passenger were on a motorcycle traveling East on Congress as the truck was traveling in the opposite direction. The driver of the truck attempted to make a left at Redfield Street striking Ponteau in the intersection. The driver, 51-year-old Thomas Sims was arrested and charged with driving under the influence.
“Willie is our thoughts and prayers today as we hope he’ll recuperate and pull through this,” said Chief Francisco Ortiz. “This was a terrible accident that left him and his passenger with severe head trauma. We have no tolerance for driving under the influence and want the community to realize the horrible consequences that can come from this irresponsible behavior. This shouldn’t have happened.”
Ponteau and his passenger remain in critical condition at area hospitals having sustained life threatening injuries. Ponteau has served the New Haven Police department since 2002. Sims is scheduled to be arraigned tomorrow.
