MAYOR DESTEFANO AND NEW HAVEN POLICE DEPARTMENT ANNOUNCE NEXT RECRUITMENT TIMELINE

(5/28/2007) NEW APPLICATIONS TO BE ACCEPTED IN SEPTEMBER

NEW HAVEN- In a press conference today, Mayor John DeStefano, Jr. alongside Assistant Chief of Police Stephanie Redding, announced today that the New Haven Police Department would begin a new round of recruitment for police officers. The recruitment campaign being kicked-off today will include cooperation from the Public Safety Committee of the Board of Aldermen, open houses throughout the community, college visits, media outreach and use of the City’s website to thoroughly inform potential applicants.

"Today we are starting this recruitment process and plan to seat a class in the spring of 2008,” said Stephanie Redding, Assistance Chief of Police. “We are reaching out to qualified individuals who are interested in serving our community."

Applications for this round of recruitment will become available on August 20th. Applicants have from September 10th through 28th to submit completed application packages to police headquarters (1 Union Avenue). Written examinations are expected to take place in October with the physical agility and oral examinations to follow through the month of November. Upon certification of the candidates list, projected for December, background investigations should take place in January through February. A new class generated from this process is anticipated to enter into the Police Academy in April of 2008.

“These new officers will continue New Haven’s commitment to community policing and will bring new talent to our hard working police department,” said DeStefano. “We need strong men and women who have the character, commitment and abilities necessary to provide safety and peace of mind to residents and visitors of New Haven. I look forward to a thorough recruitment campaign that will bring stellar candidates to the police academy next spring.”

This new recruitment campaign comes quickly on the heels of the City’s last successful drive that placed an initial 28 candidates in the police academy. Next spring’s class will be the 14th since the inception of Community Policing in New Haven and the 14th since Mayor DeStefano first took office. The current class is expected to graduate in September after which they will begin field training with experienced officers.
