NEW HAVEN POLICE BENEFIT FROM WEIGHT MANAGEMENT PROGRAM

(11/5/2007) NEW HAVEN- Twenty New Haven Police officers are participating in a rapid weight-loss program developed by Connecticut Weight and Wellness, a unique weight loss program created by Dr. Jack Hauser, a New Haven- based Cardiologist. Hauser will meet with interested officers who will be new to the program to get them started on their road to fitness and better health.

Hauser developed the program after observing that while he was treating patients for heart problems, the underlying diseases of diabetes, cholesterol and high blood pressure persisted as long as they remained overweight. Besides obesity causing health issues that translate into significant absenteeism in the workplace, over 300,000 people die each year from weight-related complications. Weight-related issues increase the cost of healthcare to employers.

“Police officers are under both mental and physical stress on a regular basis and need to be on top of their game around the clock,” said Chief Francisco Ortiz. “We are finding more and more of our officers needing to restore the good physical condition they were in when they were first hired. Poor physical shape affects their current performance level as well as their lifespan.”

“Good physical fitness from even modest weight-loss helps to sharpen mental acuity and builds endurance and confidence for those moments when a peak response is required,” said Hauser. “By implementing this program at the Police Department, the risk of diabetes, heart disease, stroke, arthritis and depression will be minimized among participating officers consequently keeping health insurance costs down.”

After only 3 weeks of the Connecticut Weight and Wellness program at the New Haven Police Department the participating officers are already on their way to better health and have lost a cumulative total of 72 pounds lost so far.

This isn’t the only program available to officers to improve their health. The City of New Haven has a contract with the Hospital of St. Raphael to carry out an Employee Wellness Program designed to increase health awareness and the quality of life for all employees and families. The program kicked-off earlier this year for City Hall employees and is now expanding to serve New Haven Police Department employees.

All St. Raphael Wellness Program services are available at no cost to employees. Year to date, the Program has provided blood pressure screening, nutrition counseling, workshops and a motivational walking program to City employees. The Employee Wellness Program is voluntary and administered by health experts from the Hospital of St. Raphael and Behavioral Consultants LLC. For more information on the St. Raphael Employee Wellness Program for New Haven employees, please contact Joanne Cavadini at 203-507-3053.
