OFFICE OF CULTURAL AFFAIRS CELEBRATES INDEPENDENCE DAY 2008

(6/16/2008) FRIDAY JULY 4th at LONG WHARF PARK

NEW HAVEN, CT. – New Haven continues its lineup of special summer events with its 4th of July fireworks show- an annual event not to be missed! “This celebration is just one more New Haven tradition that brings together families throughout the City. With so many great cultural, artistic and culinary experiences available in our City, there’s no doubt that in fact, it all happens here!,” said Mayor John DeStefano, Jr. “Events like this represent New Haven as the cultural capital of the region and we’re excited to welcome visitors to join us. I'm thrilled that our sponsors are supporting this great event. I look forward to another incredible show.”

Celebrate New Haven Fourth at Long Wharf Park is a free event for the entire family. WYBC 94.3 FM will be on site providing music and giveaways. A dazzling Pyrofx Fireworks production choreographed to patriotic music will start at approximately 9:15pm.

An assortment of food will be available from New Haven food vendors, and everyone is encouraged to come early to picnic and enjoy the harbor. Free parking has been designated for the event along Sargent Drive at Gateway Community College, Regional Water Authority, New Haven Register and Sports Haven.

In case of rain, the fireworks will be rescheduled for Saturday, July 5, 2007 at 9:15pm.

Additionally, the Office of Cultural Affairs encourages attendees of its upcoming July Fourth firework celebration to respect piping plover nesting areas along the shoreline that are fenced or posted. Piping plovers, a small shorebird the sizes of a sparrow, prefer to nest on sandy beaches such as Long Wharf and Sandy Point. Disturbances near nesting areas may cause the adults to leave the area, preventing them from attending to eggs and young. The plovers are a state-threatened species and protected under the federal Endangered Species Act. Such areas will be monitored by area police.
