    Office Of The Mayor

(1/8/2014) This is a reminder that the New Haven Magnet School Fair scheduled for this evening (Jan. 8) and the Inter-district Magnet School Fair scheduled for Saturday (Jan. 11) have been rescheduled for February, as part of district efforts to streamline the enrollment process for all schools.

The New Haven Magnet School Fair (for city residents) will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 5, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Floyd Little Athletic Center (next to Hillhouse High School). The New Haven Inter-District Magnet School Fair (for city and suburban residents) will be held on Saturday, Feb. 8, from 12 to 2 p.m. at Hill Regional Career High School.

In an effort to create a streamlined, more transparent school enrollment process, New Haven Public Schools recently announced a series of changes to the way parents enroll a child in school. The first major change is that we will have ONE lottery and ONE application for all Magnet and Charter schools and kindergarten seats in Neighborhood schools. Additionally, the district will hold its first citywide Kindergarten Fair and offer a new School Choice guide that provides information about all NHPS schools. Much of this is in response to parent and community suggestions and ideas. The new dates and deadlines are as follows:

Feb. 3 School Choice guide available and online applications open

Feb. 5 Citywide Magnet Fair at the Floyd Little Athletic Center (6-8 p.m.)

Feb. 8 Inter-district Magnet Fair at Hill Regional Career High School (12-2 p.m.)

Feb. 10 March 7 Open houses at all schools

Feb. 26 Kindergarten Fair at Floyd Little Athletic Center from (6-8 p.m.)

    March 14 Application deadline

    April 9 School Lottery

Current sibling and neighborhood preferences will remain in effect. This year, the district will continue to give kindergarten preference to children in NHPS Head Start, Magnet School and partnered School Readiness Pre-K programs, as long as they are applying to a school in their neighborhood zone.

Pre-K enrollment for magnet schools will happen during the School Choice enrollment process in the spring. Pre-K enrollment for Head Start and School Readiness programs will remain a separate process that also takes place in the spring. Parents with questions about pre-K enrollment can call 203-946-6179 or pick up an application at the Early Childhood Registration Office at 80 Hamilton Street.
