    JUST IN TIME FOR SUMMER: NEW HAVEN’S PUBLIC CANOEING AND KAYAKING PROGRAM FOR 2013

    (6/25/2013) (New Haven, CT) - Summer is here with its longer day light and warmer weather, so why not get out and enjoy the evening with one of New Haven’s Parks Department kayak or canoe instructional tours! The tours are being offered on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at various locations around New Haven. This is a great opportunity to join with New Haven Parks and Recreation Outdoor Adventure Program to experience and learn kayaking and canoeing skills and safety. All equipment will be provided. All you need to bring is your personal gear and a desire for some fun.

    Instructional Tours are available for those who want to get out and enjoy an evening on the water, whether you are a beginner or experienced paddler. On this tour we will show you how to do basic paddle strokes (power, turning and correction strokes). We will also talk about basic safety procedures, equipment care and handling for canoes and kayaks. All equipment will be provided. Each canoeing instructional tour is $15 for New Haven residents and $20 for non-residents; each kayaking tour is $20 for residents and $25 for non- residents. Children under 10 years of age are half-price. The minimum age requirement for the kayaking instructional tour is 12 and over, but participants between the ages 12 and 16 must be accompanied by an adult. For canoeing, the minimum age is five, but participants between the ages of 5 and16 must be accompanied by an adult. These instructional tours will be held from 5:30 pm to 8 pm at the dates and locations listed below.

    • Thursday 8/1 Canoe at Mill River

    • Tuesday 8/6 Kayak at Lighthouse Point Park

    For those who want to learn even more about the sport, the Parks Department will be offering a two-day course, Essentials of Canoe Touring, on August 6th and 7th; and Essentials of Kayak Touring will be offered on August 8th and 9th. These classes are for paddlers with little or no kayaking or canoeing experience wanting to take the sport to the next level. Participants will learn to be confident and safe paddlers with the skills to participate in kayak or canoe touring in protected waters. These courses will cover equipment needs, trip-planning, paddling strokes and recoveries. All equipment, including sit-inside sea kayaks or canoes, personal floatation devices (PFDs), paddles and related safety gear will be provided at no additional fee. If approved by our Certified American Canoe Association kayaking/Canoeing instructors, participants may also choose to use their own gear. Each course is a 12-hour program, taught over the course of two days.

    The Essentials of Kayaking course will be offered on August 8th and August 9th at Lighthouse Point Park from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm. The cost for this course if $200 for New Haven residents and $250 for non-residents. The minimum age for participation is 12 (ages 12-16 must be accompanied by an adult).

    The Essential of Canoeing Touring course will be held at a fresh water lake in the greater New Haven area (the exact location is to be determined). This course will run from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm on August 6th and August 7th. The cost for this course if $200 for New Haven residents and $250 for non-residents. The minimum age for participation is 12 (ages 12-16 must be accompanied by an adult).
