    Office Of The Mayor

(New Haven, CT) The City of New Haven today announced a new payment option available for on-street metered parking: the Parkmobile smart phone app will allow users to pay for parking by mobile phone and will work on both coin-only and the newer meters that also accept credit cards. The app will add convenience and efficiency for downtown parkers-- even sending text alerts when its time to add money to the meter and allowing users to do so by phone, wherever they happen to be.

“With the most densely populated downtown in New England and thousands of visitors each month, it’s important for our city to take advantage of technology and ensure convenience for on-street parkers and the institution of Parkmobile provides this convenience,” said New Haven Mayor John DeStefano, Jr.

Jim Travers, the City’s Director of Transportation, Traffic and Parking, said that he has been looking at mobile apps for metered parking payment for a couple of years, but until Parkmobile, he felt the technology wasn’t where it needed to be to ensure ease of use in New Haven. “The added option of pay by cell is at all on-street meters and is so convenient and simple to use. We see this as another way to greatly improve the customer experience of paid parking for our residents and visitors,” said Travers. He noted that Parkmobile will be an additional payment option and that coin meters and credit/debit meters will still take coin and credit/debit cards, as well as parking vouchers.

To use the new Parkmobile system (which has applications for iPhone, Android, Windows, and Blackberry systems), customers can register for free at www.parkmobile.com or download the mobile app onto their phone. Once registered, users can choose between using the mobile app, the internet, or a toll free number to pay for parking.

After setting up an account, customers can immediately start using the system with their registered mobile phone. Users can also select the option to receive alerts and reminders 15 minutes prior to expiration of their parking session-and pay for more parking without having to go back to the meter.

"Parkmobile is very excited to launch our mobile payment parking service in New Haven," said Cherie Fuzzell, CEO of Parkmobile USA, Inc. “This technology offers customers a new and better way to pay for parking. Our mobile payment service is an example of another technology that can make our lives easier and more efficient.”

Parkmobile users can choose to become Basic Members or Preferred Members. Basic members are charged a $.33 convenience fee per use. However, if they utilize the Parkmobile “Wallet” as their payment method, the convenience fee is reduced to $.28 per use. The “Wallet” is a service that Parkmobile provides whereby users designate a sum of money from which parking payments will be subtracted and will automatically be reloaded for the selected amount once the balance has been reduced to $0.00.

The Preferred member option-- ideal for users who park downtown very often-- has $.99 a monthly fee in return for a reduced convenience fee of $.28 per use, which is reduced even further to $.23 if the Parkmobile Wallet is used as the payment method.
