The 3rd Annual LAMP (Light Artists Making Places), City-Wide Open Studios, Illuminate On9 Light up New Haven Tonight!
Grand-Opening Celebrations for Three New Businesses Kick-off this month’s First Friday
(New Haven, CT) The 3rd Annual Light Artists Making Places (LAMP), New England’s Premier Light Event will light up the night on Friday, October 4, 2013 at 8:00 p.m. and will showcase international artists working in film, video and performance art in New Haven’s historic Ninth Square. LAMP has doubled in size including over 80 artists in 20 sites within a two-block radius, each hosting a unique performance/ night and light driven installation. The event this year will commemorate the 375th birthday of the city and capture the spirit and history of New Haven’s “Phantom Ship.” LAMP artists will project illuminations, both large and small, using new and old technology with a variety of projection devices. Highlights include an installation by world-renowned artist Vicki DaSilva, a special installation celebrating Connecticut’s own Projects 2K and a live performance by Mark Mulchay.
Friday night also marks the beginning of Artspace’s month-long annual City-Wide Open Studios (CWOS), when artists across the city will open their studios to the public. Additionally, the work of artists across New England will be presented in various locations throughout the city. CWOS will kick off October 4th with an opening reception at their Ninth Square location on 50 Orange Street at 5:00 pm and will continue the next weekend at the Erector Square Weekend October 12-13, the Passport Weekend October 19-20, and will finish up with the Alternative Space Weekend on October 26-27.
October 4th will also be an exciting day for On9, the neighborhood’s monthly First Friday event. Three new businesses are joining New Haven’s thriving Ninth Square neighborhood. The grand openings of Meat & Co. (118 Crown Street), Inspired Turkey (86 Crown Street) and Giampietro Gallery (91 Orange Street) take place from 6 to 7 p.m., during the latest “On9” festivities in the district.
“As result of Project Storefronts, New Haven’s Ninth Square has truly become a “destination” for artists and creative entrepreneurs alike,” said Kelly Murphy, City of New Haven Economic Development Administrator. “With the successes of signature events such as LAMP, On9 and City-Wide Open Studios come new businesses and jobs, spurring economic prosperity for our residents.”
Illuminate On9 will begin with a musical performance by Music Haven’s children’s orchestra. It will also feature a craft brew tasting at the Luck & Levity Brewshop (118 Crown Street), glow in the dark yoga hosted by Breathing Room (817 Chapel Street) and much more.
