NEW HAVEN POLICE MAKE ARRESTS IN TWO SEPARATE BURGLARY AND ROBBERY INCIDENTS
(2/21/2008) NEW HAVEN- At 2:27 p.m. on Wednesday, New Haven police arrested David Meeks for a burglary executed at 275 Dwight Street. Residents of that apartment found Meeks, a 31 year-old man from Brooklyn, NY (presently homeless), in a common hallway of the building. He was looking through residents’ mail. The residents questioned Meeks about his presence in the building at which point he lifted his shirt to display a knife that was tucked into the waistband of his pants. The residents were able to get the knife away from him and subdue him until police arrived on scene and took him into custody. Meeks was charged with Burglary 1st degree and carrying a dangerous weapon.
At 1:03 a.m., community patrol officers responded to a report of an attempted robbery of a pizza delivery man at 532 Winthrop Ave. New Haven patrol officers were able to gain access to the second floor apartment, where they found three individuals hiding in a bedroom. Timothy Rich, 21 years-old, and two juveniles were all identified by the victim of the crime as having taken part in the attempted robbery. The three were subsequently arrested for robbery. At the time of arrest, Rich was in the possession of the handgun used during the crime, and was therefore additionally charged with illegal weapons possession. A woman at the scene was also arrested for risk of injury to a minor and interfering with police.
“This was an outstanding piece of police work, done by several dedicated law enforcement professionals who go out and protect our street every night. The efforts of these officers will make an impact in the Winthrop Ave. neighborhood that they patrol,” said Captain Peter Reichard of the NHPD Investigative Services Division.
