    Office Of The Mayor

(3/3/2008) NEW HAVEN- In a news conference at City Hall today, Mayor John DeStefano, Jr. announced the formation of a Teen Pregnancy Prevention Council. In 2006, a Teen Pregnancy Prevention Task Force appointed by the Mayor convened to develop a set of recommendations to address Teen Pregnancy Prevention challenges the City was facing. The Task Force released a report last August, A Call to Action: Helping New Haven Teens Avoid Unintended Pregnancy, recommending a number of educational, health and supportive responses the New Haven community should implement in an effort to prevent unintended teen pregnancies.

“Thanks to great work by our community partners, we’ve come a long way in reducing overall teen pregnancy rates in New Haven,” said DeStefano. “But there’s still more to be done. This Council will work to carry out the recommendations of the Task Force’s report issued last summer and will bring together the various resources available throughout New Haven to give our young people the education and support they need to make healthy and well-informed decisions.”

The Council was developed to carry out these recommendations as follows:

    - Identify existing community resources and use them to support recommendations without duplicating services

    - Improve data collection to generate regular progress reports on process and outcome measures

    - Prioritze and implement the report developed by the Mayor’s Task Force on Teen Pregnancy Prevention

    - Collaborate with the Board of Education towards creating a comprehensive health curriculum for the New Haven Public Schools.

    Members of the Council include:

    - Blannie Bostic of the Male Involvement Network

    - Diance Brown Petteway, Director, Stetson Library
