The Neighborhood Services Division begins the processes for identifying and disposing of blighted properties in each neighborhood. The Division also provides City Hall's outreach to citizens and community groups, providing assistance and receiving feedback for LCI on what is needed in their neighborhoods. During the past year, neighborhood specialists have created neighborhood teams with officials from City departments such as, Police, City Plan, Public Works, Fire Health and other LCI personnel to find solutions to specific problems. Neighborhood Specialists also support the City Plan and Empowerment Zone effort to create Neighborhood Plans for each of our neighborhoods and meet regularly with residents to discuss and seek input to these efforts.
A new initiative called the ‘Neighborhood Sweep' began in 1998. The Sweep is a concerted effort between Neighborhood Specialists, Housing Code and Zoning Inspectors, as well as personnel from the Health Department, Police Department and State Department of Environmental Protection. Each Sweep goes door-to-door and parcel-by-parcel in a particular neighborhood and focuses on code enforcement, clean-up, securing vacant buildings, graffiti removal, fencing and property management. As part of its property maintenance component, the Division removes over 10,000 tons of trash from blighted properties throughout the City each year and, this year, has removed graffiti from 130 sites and removed 200 abandoned vehicles off of city property.
