NEW HAVEN CELEBRATES EXPANSION OF TWO BUSINESSES AS PART OF CITY’S ONGOING DEVELOPMENT BOOM

(8/12/2010) NEW HAVEN- At a news conference today, the City of New Haven and the Connecticut Development Authority (CDA) celebrated the expansion of two local businesses, New England Seating and BoldWood Interiors.

BoldWood Interiors and New England Seating, complimentary businesses that manufacture furniture for restaurants, including bars, cabinetry, booths and tables, recently purchased the 70,000 square foot building located at 120-138 Haven Street, formerly home to the Gant Shirt Factory. The two businesses have been leasing 40,000 square feet of space in this facility for the past several years and, with this purchase, will be able to expand their operations into the building’s remaining 30,000 square feet.

BoldWood Interiors and New England Seating relocated to New Haven from Hartford in 2004 and 2006, respectively. Since their relocation, the City of New Haven has assisted these businesses in attaining funding for upgrading and fitting-out the facility, façade improvements and Enterprise Zone tax abatements. The businesses worked with the City’s Department of Economic Development, the Economic Development Corporation and CDA to secure financing for this purchase. “This shows that aging industrial buildings can be returned to productivity,” said New Haven’s Economic Development Administrator, Kelly Murphy. “The purchase and improvement of this property has been a collaborative effort to ensure the retention of quality jobs in this historically working class neighborhood.”

“We were happy to work with BoldWood Interiors and New England Seating in their purchase of this historic building,” said Marie O'Brien, president of the Connecticut Development Authority. “It showcases the promise of responsible growth investments that serve businesses, employees, cities and neighborhoods: investments that revitalize existing infrastructure, expand entrepreneurial opportunities and attract companies and jobs.”

BoldWood Interiors and New England Seating collectively employ 35 people and with this expansion anticipate hiring 7-10 new staff. “Purchasing our manufacturing facility gives us the opportunity to expand, to create new jobs and to become more fully invested in our neighborhood,” said Rob Goldenthal, owner of New England Seating.

“New Haven is our home and many of our employees live in the surrounding area,” said Rob Bolduc, owner of BoldWood Interiors. “We’re excited to build upon the relationship that exists between our businesses and the community”

“The City welcomes this investment by BoldWood Interiors and New England Seating to continue the revitalization of this neighborhood,” said Mayor John DeStefano, Jr. “New Haven still retains a thriving manufacturing base evidenced by the commitment of BoldWood Interiors and New England Seating to grow and expand their facilities here”
