    'TIS THE SEASON TO VISIT DOWNTOWN NEW HAVEN

    (11/26/2013) ~ New Haven Spreads Holiday Cheer with Special Events and Promotions ~

    This holiday season, New Haven is offering exciting and festive events that are fun for the whole family. From sleigh rides and visits with Santa to holiday crafts and performances, everyone can easily feel the joyful spirit by experiencing these fun-filled holiday happenings.

    "We are thrilled to offer an array of exciting events and attractions this holiday season," says Mayor John DeStefano, Jr. "The holidays are a great time to come together as a community, and these events encourage both residents and visitors to celebrate this special time of year in our marvelous city."

    Below is a sampling of New Haven's holiday happenings:

    Elm City Elf | City-Wide | November 30 - December 23, 2013:

    New this holiday season, "Elm City Elf," is a city-wide social media based promotion that runs Saturday, November 30 through Monday, December 23. Participants can simply follow Elm City Elf on Twitter and "Like" Elm City Elf on Facebook for clues and a chance to win fabulous shopping and dining prizes this holiday season! No purchase is necessary. For more information, visit www.elmcityelf.com. Elm City Elf is provided by Economic Development Corporation of New Haven, Market New Haven & The shops at Yale.

    New Haven Tree Lighting and Sleigh Rides |New Haven Green | December 2013:

    Families can brighten up the holiday season by enjoying New Haven's beautiful holiday tree lighting on the city's historic green. The annual celebration will take place on December 5 (rain date is December 6) from 4:00-8:00pm, and will feature visits with Santa, live performances from students and teachers of the Neighborhood Music School, horse-drawn carriage and carousel rides, free holiday arts and crafts and more.

    Visitors can also enjoy free horse-drawn sleigh rides around the New Haven Green on Saturdays in December from 12:00pm-4:00pm. The sleigh rides are provided by New Haven's Department of Arts, Culture & Tourism, Department of Parks, Recreation & Trees and Department of Transportation, Traffic and Parking and the Town Green District.

    Holiday Mart| Project Storefronts, 756 Chapel Street |December 5-22, 2013:

    Project Storefronts invites holiday shoppers to browse local artwork, handcrafted jewelry, home décor, vintage clothing and more this season on Thursdays and Fridays from 11:00am-6:00pm, or Saturdays and Sundays from 12:00pm-5:00pm.     Wreaths of Hope in Harmony with Trees of Hope | Maritime Center Long Wharf & The shops at Yale | December 7-15, 2013:

    The shops at Yale and Ronald McDonald House of Connecticut have partnered to connect New Haven's vibrant downtown community of shops and restaurants with a 24-year-long tradition: Trees of Hope. Trees of Hope takes place at the Maritime Center located on Long Wharf Drive and displays more than 100 trees decorated in various themes, which are donated by numerous organizations and individuals. The shops at Yale have created a beautiful tree decorated with blue and white ornaments and 18 gift cards, which are worth a combined total of $735. In total the tree is worth more than $1,000, and one lucky supporter will win the entire package. Each shop and restaurant that generously donated a gift card will display a Wreath of Hope on its door to indicate its support of Ronald McDonald House of Connecticut, an organization that provides shelter for families of children receiving medical treatment.

    Holiday Hospitality Station | 1000 Chapel Street | Thursdays in December 2013:

    Visitors can stop by the Town Green District's Holiday Hospitality Station on December 5, 12 or 19 where freshly popped popcorn and hot apple cider will be served from 6:00pm-8:00pm. The apple cider is donated by Elm City Market.

    Yuletide Carolers and Strolling Santa | The shops at Yale | December 2013:

    Connecticut Yuletide Carolers will perform at the shops at Yale located along Chapel Street and Broadway on Thursdays in December from 5:00pm-8:00pm on December 5, 12 and 19. Additionally, a "Strolling Santa" will walk around Chapel Street and Broadway on Saturdays in December from 2:00pm-6:00pm on December 7, 14 and 21.     Performances at the Shubert Theater | 247 College Street | December 2013:

    The Shubert Theater will be putting on a number of exciting performances this holiday season, including A Christmas Carol from November 29-December 1, New Haven Ballet's The Nutcracker from December 13-15 and the Blue Man Group performing December 26 through New Year's Eve, December 31.     45th Annual Celebration of American Crafts | Creative Arts Workshop | November 2 - December 24, 2013:

    The 45th Annual Celebration of American Crafts, an exhibition and sale of fine, contemporary crafts, will be held through December 24 and will take place at the Creative Arts Workshop, located at 80 Audubon Street. For more information, visit www.creativeartsworkshop.org/celebration.

    Christmas Crèche Exhibition | Knights of Columbus Museum | November 22, 2013 - February 2, 2014:

    The Knights of Columbus Museum is presenting its ninth annual Christmas crèche exhibition, Ordinary Materials, Extraordinary Message: Christmas Nativities in Paper, from November 22through February 2 in cooperation with the Italian Friends of the Crèche Association. The show features 39 colorful Nativity scenes, crafted from paper, from throughout Europe and the United States. Admission and parking at the Knights of Columbus Museum is free, and it is open daily from 10:00am-5:00pm. For more information, visit www.kofcmuseum.org.

    Cookies On9|Ninth Square Historic District | December 6, 2013 from 6:00pm-8:00pm:

    Visitors can enjoy an evening of strolling through New Haven's Historic Ninth Square while gathering over a dozen festive treats from participating businesses. Tickets cost $25.00, and proceeds benefit the "Neighbors in Need" dinner hosted by Gateway Community College Foundation. For more information, visit www.on9newhaven.com.

    Holiday Windows designed by Paier College of Art | Chapel Street | November 30, 2013 - January 4, 2014:

    The shops at Yale and Paier College of Art will create an artful winter wonderland along Chapel Street with delicate, white-paper sculptures in storefronts for the holiday season. A group of more than 15 students and professors from Paier College of Art will demonstrate their display skills as they design sculptures using paper and glue to create a series of unique installations. The students and professors will work directly with business owners and managers to design sculptures that complement the merchandise or menu offered in each business.     Free Parking at the shops at Yale | 56 Broadway & 255 Crown Street Lots | Weekends in December 2013:

    The shops at Yale will offer free parking at the 56 Broadway Center Lot and 255 Crown Street Lot on Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Saturdays and Sundays in December to those that park in either lot and make a purchase of $15 or more at any of the shops at Yale.
