CITY CELEBRATES TOPPING-OFF OF 360 STATE DEVELOPMENT
(12/11/2009) NEW HAVEN- Today marks a significant milestone in the construction of the 360 State Street Project, as the City celebrates the “topping-off” of the building’s 32 stories of steel framing. The $190 million, 700,000 square foot mixed-use development, when completed, will be the second tallest building in New Haven. This LEED Platinum development will be host to 500 apartment units and a full service grocery store. Apartments at 360 State will be ready for occupancy by Summer 2010.
In building construction, topping off is a ceremony held when the last beam is placed at the top of a building. Suffolk Construction, the developer Becker + Becker and City officials will sign this final beam then hoist it into place.
“This is an exciting day in the progress of this project as Suffolk launches the final stages of construction and we experience a continued boom in the City’s economic development activity,” said Mayor John DeStefano, Jr. “What’s more impressive is not just the amount of development we are experiencing but that this is happening in a very tough economy. This speaks to the overall economic strength of our City.”
“Construction on this project has run very smoothly and, in fact, this project is right on schedule and is expected to be completed by September 2010” said Bruce Becker of Becker + Becker, the developer of the 360 State Street project. “We are introducing a new product with lots of amenities in New Haven that we feel will be attractive to many new prospective tenants from outside the City including new doctors and researchers coming to work at Smilow Cancer Center, some of the more than 35,000 Yale alumni who live in the NY metropolitan area, empty nesters, young professionals and those simply looking for an easy commute anywhere between New Haven and New York City.”
“The 360 State Street project reflects a great partnership between the developer, the City and the State of Connecticut” said Kelly Murphy, New Haven’s Economic Development Administrator. “This major investment has been a catalyst for other private investments in the City including two projects in the planning stage. This partnership between the City, the State and the private sector is essential to continued economic growth.”
New Haven is currently experiencing an unprecedented building boom with 2 million square feet under construction or recently completed worth $1 billion. Almost half a million square feet in the City are estimated to start construction before the end of the year including the new downtown location of Gateway Community College.
