Commission on Disabilities
The goal of the Commission on Disabilities is to improve the quality of life for the entire community by embracing the contribution of its citizens with disabilities.
The Commission primarily focuses on issues related to accessibility, housing, transportation, education and public awareness.
The Commission participates in numerous community activities, including:
- International Festival of Arts and Ideas
- Trees of Hope, for Ronald McDonald House
- Support for legislative initiatives
- Advocating increased accessibility in city/state building code
- Advocating for improved enforcement of Disability Parking Permits
The Commission hosts guest speakers on topics of concern to the disability community. Recent speakers include:
- Ms. Kelly Murphy, Economic Development Administrator
- Mr. Christopher Laux, Connecticut State Building Inspector
- Mr. Francisco Ortiz, New Haven Chief of Police
- Mr. Bob Lynn, Department Director of School Construction, New Haven Board of Education
- Dr. Reginald Mayo and Staff, City of New Haven Department of Education
- Mr. Robert Solomon, Commissioner, Housing Authority of New Haven
The Commission also invites members of the community to speak on disability issues directly affecting their lives.
Commission on Disabilities Meeting Schedules
All meetings unless otherwise notified will be held on the 2nd Monday every month from 5:15 PM to 7:00 PM in Meeting Room One on the 2nd floor of the Atrium section of City Hall. Meetings are open to the public. Click on the links below to read the minutes of the meetings.
