Route 34 West Municipal Development Plan (MDP)

Overview

The City of New Haven, acting through its Development Commission, is currently working on the Route 34 Municipal Development Plan (“MDP”) in accordance with Chapter 132 of Connecticut (CT) General Statutes.  The MDP will advance a comprehensive community revitalization of the largely undeveloped corridor of Route 34 between Howe Street and Ella T. Grasso Boulevard (Route10) that is comprised of 45 parcels totaling ±36.87 acres.

The development of the parcels along Route 34 West is a great opportunity for the City of New Haven,  since it would not only allow the City to expand its tax base, but also benefits residents through the creation of additional jobs, neighborhood retail and services, and work force housing.   The proposed Plan also seeks to re-connect the three neighborhoods—the West River, Dwight, and Hill along the corridor; to central employment places; and to various transportation nodes in the city.  Increasing public transit viability for the residents in these neighborhoods, improving transit connections to the train station, and incorporating traffic calming measures along the corridor are some of the transportation goals of the Plan. 

The City Staff is also working on an economic strategy to prepare the residents and local institutions to participate in the proposed development.  The Project parcels are now either City-owned or owned by developers who have a good working relationship with the City.

The City is encouraging vigorous public participation and involvement in the planning process by scheduling a series of workshops and public informational meetings every month.  For more information on the Project, please contact:
