Route 34 East Urban Boulevard - Downtown Crossing
 |
Downtown Crossing is part of a long-term civic effort to rebuild New Haven in the aftermath of urban renewal. Today, the below-grade section of the Route 34 highway between Union Avenue and the Air Rights Garage is a physical and psychological barrier between neighborhoods. The Downtown Crossing project will make the underutilized land area currently occupied by expressway stubs and ramps available for reuse as development sites, creating 10 acres for new building projects. The proposed mixed-use developments will line two walkable, livable, and sustainable urban boulevards on the current North and South Frontage Road right-of-ways. The boulevards will be designed at an urban scale to suit all forms of transportation: pedestrians, bikes, public transit, and vehicles. The project will provide both the transportation infrastructure and the developable land needed to grow the New Haven economy and provide up to 4,000 new local jobs at all skill levels. |
