Community Arts Grants recipients for 2013 revealed;
each will receive funding for neighborhood arts programming
in New Haven
(New Haven, CT) Mayor John DeStefano Jr. and the City’s Department of Arts, Culture and Tourism (DACT) announced Tuesday the recipients of this year’s Mayor’s Community Arts Grants, awarding close to $25,500 in funding to support 25 neighborhood-based arts and cultural activities. The award presentations were held at Arte, one of this year’s grant recipients.
Since its inception in 2000, the Mayor’s Community Arts Grant Program has awarded $350,496 to over 220 arts and cultural projects such as festivals, murals, performances, and apprenticeships in the City of New Haven. Past winners of the Mayor’s Community Arts Grant program have gone on to great success in New Haven and beyond. 2012 recipient, Theater 4, producers of the Acting Out theater festival hosted at IKEA, were featured in Time magazine in June.
“New Haven is the Cultural Capital of Connecticut--and not just for our world renowned International Festival of Arts and Ideas and downtown’s museums and theaters. Our neighborhoods have rich arts and cultural events and organizations,” said Mayor John DeStefano, Jr. “These grants support the development of local artists and artist organizations that serve our community and provide arts education and entertainment, making New Haven a vibrant place to live.”
The Mayor’s Community Arts Grants Program provides financial, marketing and technical assistance for arts and cultural programming in New Haven neighborhoods. The goals of the program are:
1.To encourage the education of emerging artists;
2.To strengthen neighborhood cohesiveness through collaborative programs particularly aimed at families and youth; and
3.To promote and celebrate cultural awareness and diversity.
Grant amounts this year ranged from $500 to $1,200. These grants are often the only funding source for some of these organizations, many of whom do not qualify for larger grants due to a lack of official non-profit status. While the awards in many cases are modest, they provide artists and organizations the opportunity to present, teach or practice their art in neighborhoods across the city.
Alyson Fox, of IMapNewHaven, one of this year’s grant recipients, noted, “IMapNewHaven is honored to be recognized by the Mayor’s Community Arts Grant program. The support from the grant will not only bolster the credibility of the project but will allow us to reach more New Havenites to give them a forum to reflect on, creatively capture, and publicly share the stories of what's important in their lives in this city.”
Individual artists, non-profit arts and cultural organizations working with neighborhood-based community and/or youth or senior groups within the City of New Haven were eligible to apply. Eligible activities include festivals, parades, exhibitions, murals/public art, children's activities, inter-generational programs, arts education, film, public performances, neighborhood collaborations and apprenticeships. Applicants may apply for up to $1,500 in funding.
“The arts have a positive impact on a City’s cultural and economic health. The Department of Arts, Culture and Tourism has focused on providing support for arts activities throughout the City, including supporting community-based arts organizations in neighborhoods,” stated Kelly Murphy, the City’s Economic Development Administrator.
This year DACT received forty-eight applications and selected twenty-three organizations and two individuals to receive funding through a competitive process. The 2013 awards will fund activities throughout the City, including the Fair Haven Community Parade; the 3rd Annual Day of the Dead Parade and puppet making workshops; a community-mapping project; instrument petting zoos and the development of artistic bike racks. The Mayor’s Community Arts Grants Program was established in 2000, and is one of a number of the Department of Arts, Culture and Tourism’s efforts aimed at supporting local artists and fostering arts and cultural events across the city.
The Winchester Revitalization Art Project, a joint effort of the Department of Arts, Culture and Tourism, the Livable City Initiative and the Office of Economic Development was launched three years ago and. seeks to encourage arts and culture in the Newhallville neighborhood. This is accomplished through neighbor-based arts programming that engages the public on Winchester Avenue during the summer months and in other neighborhood venues through the fall, winter and spring.
Also run by the Department of Arts, Culture and Tourism is Project Storefronts, now in its third year of operation. Project Storefronts is an award-winning program that brings fresh, innovative arts-related businesses to life in formerly vacant retail spaces in New Haven, by encouraging artists and entrepreneurs to test the viability of art/creative inspired businesses. Project Storefronts provides access to empty storefronts as well as provide participants technical support network of business and creative professionals. Project Storefronts is just one part of the 9th Square Innovation District that is home to The Grove and The Bourse, new and exciting co-working spaces, Make Haven, a gathering place and workshop for makers, creators, tinkerers and dreamers and our newest addition, The Grid, which is part of the recently announced CT Innovation Ecosystem.
The City of New Haven's Department of Cultural Affairs is dedicated to enhancing the City's quality of life and supporting its economic development through the production of events, the commissioning of public art and assisting and promoting New Haven's many artists and cultural organizations.
