(New Haven, CT) -- Mayor John DeStefano, Jr. and the Department of Arts, Culture and Tourism are pleased to announce the 2013-2014 Mayor’s Community Arts Grant Program funding cycle. The Mayor’s Community Arts Grant Program supports the community by providing financial, marketing and technical assistance for arts and cultural related programs, projects and events which occur in New Haven neighborhoods. The goals of the program are to encourage the education of emerging artists; to strengthen neighborhood cohesiveness through collaborative programs particularly aimed at families and youth; and to promote and celebrate cultural awareness and diversity.
The Mayor’s Community Arts Grant Program is designed to support and boost exposure of New Haven’s many artists and neighborhood-based organizations. Individuals, community groups and youth groups who are presenting, teaching or practicing artists in the City of New Haven are eligible to apply. Groups with or without non-profit status are eligible to apply. The Mayor’s Community Arts Grant Program provides funding for three areas: Arts Programming, Cultural Heritage and Artist Education.
“Artists and the arts in New Haven add so much vibrancy to our City,” said Mayor John DeStefano, Jr., “These grants support artists but also provide New Haven’s youth with important exposure to the arts.”

Individuals and groups interested in applying are required to submit a letter of intent to apply by May 24, 2013. The application deadline is June 7, 2013. Prospective applicants are strongly urged to attend one the free information sessions about the program that will held at locations across the City. The informational sessions will be held as follows: May 6, at 5pm at the Stetson Library Program Room, 200 Dixwell Avenue; May 7, 2013 at 5:30pm at the Fair Haven Library Program Room, 182 Grand Avenue; May 8, 2013 at 5pm at the Downtown (Ives) Library Performing Arts Program Room at 133 Elm Street; May 14, 2013 at 5:30pm at Wilson (Hill) Library Program Room, 303 Washington Ave; and on May 22 at 5pm at the Mitchell Library Program Room, 37 Harrison Street.
“The great thing about this program is that you do not have to be a non-profit to apply, which is rare, and provides the opportunity for individual artists and community groups to apply” stated Vivian Nabeta, Director of the Department of Arts, Culture and Tourism. “I encourage anyone who is interested in applying to attend one of the informational sessions that we will hold throughout the month of May.”
The program, managed by the Department of Arts, Culture and Tourism, has granted 249 awards in support of programming by organizations and individuals since its inception in 2000. A variety of arts and cultural activities such as festivals, murals, performances, and apprenticeships in New Haven’s neighborhoods have occurred as a result.
