The New Haven Cultural Affairs Commission holds regular meetings on the Second Monday of each month at 5:45pm except for holidays.The meetings will take place in the Mayor's Press Room City Hall, 165 Church Street, 2nd Floor, New Haven, Connecticut unless otherwise stated.

The Cultural Affairs Commission as enabled by Connecticut General Statutes, and the City Charter and Ordinances, is designated as the municipal body responsible for the city's arts and cultural activity. Its primary roles and responsibilities are as follows:
- Encourage, sponsor or conduct programs to advance awareness of, interest in, and development of the fine arts, performing arts and cultural activities. The commission may perform these acts alone, or in collaboration with public or private agencies;
- Broaden awareness that culture and the arts can culturally and economically contribute to benefit the city;
- Develop guidelines for the receipt and purchase of works of art to be placed on municipal property, and advise the mayor and board of aldermen in these areas;
- Develop guidelines and oversee the care, maintenance and preservation of the city's art collection;
- Seek out and receive grants for artistic and cultural programs, develop programs for the expenditure of such funds, and assist others in preparing applications for such funds;
- Administer the city ordinance establishing a municipal fund for works of art;
- Foster communication and coordination with government agencies, public and private organizations and institutions with respect to artistic and cultural activities and development;
- Assist in the development of facilities for artistic and cultural activities;
- Advise and assist the city in connection with such other artistic and cultural activities that the city refers to it; and
- Designate the department of cultural affairs to operate on its behalf.
